Concealed carry in Arizona
Arizona was one of the first states to allow permitless concealed carry, and it still issues a permit for people who want the extra benefits. This guide explains both and helps you choose a carry pistol. It reflects the law as of September 2026 and is not legal advice.
Permitless carry
Since 2010, anyone 21 or older who can legally possess a firearm may carry a concealed handgun in Arizona without a permit. If a police officer asks during a stop whether you are armed, Arizona law requires you to answer truthfully.
The Arizona CCW permit
The permit is issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Applicants must be 21, or 19 with qualifying military service, and complete an approved firearms safety course. The permit is valid for five years. Check the DPS concealed weapons page for the current fee and course rules.
Why get one
- Travel: many states honor the Arizona permit.
- Buying: the permit can replace the NICS check at an Arizona dealer.
- Places: permit holders can carry in some restaurants and bars that serve alcohol, if they do not drink and the place is not posted.
Where you cannot carry
Polling places on election day, schools, nuclear and power facilities, secured areas of airports, posted public events and establishments that provide secure storage, and posted businesses that serve alcohol. Federal buildings are off limits under federal law. Tribal lands have their own rules.
Choosing a carry pistol
Arizona summers push most people toward thin, light pistols carried inside the waistband. Popular choices include the SIG P365 family, Glock 19, 43X and 48, Springfield Hellcat and Smith and Wesson Shield Plus. Pistol builders often carry Glock-pattern pistols they have upgraded with a new slide, barrel or trigger; if you do, test the finished pistol with several hundred rounds of your carry ammunition before you trust it.

- Optic: many carry pistols are optics-ready.
- Holster: a rigid holster that covers the trigger guard.
